Proxima Fusion is Europe’s fastest-growing fusion company and the first ever spin-out from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in 60 years. Founded in 2023, we are building a new generation of commercial stellarator power plants, drawing on decades of research and the record-breaking performance of Wendelstein 7-X.
Our approach focuses on quasi-isodynamic stellarators: inherently steady-state machines designed to combine strong plasma performance with the engineering realities of a power plant. Our development roadmap begins with Alpha, a demonstration stellarator designed to achieve scientific breakeven, followed by Stellaris, our first-of-a-kind commercial power plant. We combine research, advanced computation and precision engineering to shorten the path from theory to commercial deployment.
Backed by more than €650 million from private and public investors, Proxima has grown to a team of over 200 people across Munich, Zurich and Oxford. Physicists, engineers, software specialists, manufacturing experts and project leaders work together on some of fusion’s hardest challenges, from plasma optimisation and the development of high-temperature superconducting magnets to cryogenics, vacuum systems, cooling and plant integration.
For PhD researchers, Proxima offers the opportunity to take deep scientific expertise beyond the laboratory and apply it to real hardware, industrial systems and an ambitious delivery roadmap. We value rigorous thinking, fast iteration and collaboration across disciplines. Whether your background is in plasma physics, applied mathematics, materials science, engineering or computation, you can help turn stellarator research into an energy system built for the grid.
Our mission is simple: building stellarators to power the future and delivering clean energy, for good.
